The MVAC Musical is taking the stage at the Manning Entertainment Centre on June 17 and 19.
Unicorn Girl is set to be funny, fast-paced and packed with music, drama and larger-than-life characters. This brilliant new production explores friendship, power and what happens when popularity goes too far.
The play is the work of Madelaine Nunn and this is the first time it is being brought to life on stage.
The show is a big endeavour for our staff and students, and the learning experiences are wide and deep-reaching. Director Mrs Kim Sullivan has created an educational program that is a valued resource, allowing staff to explore the educational benefits of the stage production and enhance their understanding and engagement. Mid Coast Council have included the show as part of their educational theatre program for local schools, which includes a Q&A session after the matinee performances, where audience members are invited to ask questions and discuss the show’s themes.
The play explores themes of identity and visibility, power and corruption, friendship and loyalty, rumours and reputation, and belonging.
The learning experiences are hands-on, across both Junior School and Senior School. From late-night rehearsals for the cast and crew to choir practice for our Junior students, the nerves and excitement for performance night are building. You might think the onstage element is the only experience provided for students, but in fact, a team of students interested in learning more about how things work are busy in the backstage crew, production team, and the band. This is a full-scale production taken to the public, and our students engage with the process from start to finish.
In the Junior School, Mrs Kristi Silvester has coordinated an Art Showcase that opened to the public from Monday, June 1, to Wednesday, June 3. The artworks were all inspired by the upcoming production, with students creating colourful, creative, and imaginative portraits that celebrate the uniqueness and individuality of every child across the school – a key theme at the heart of Unicorn Girl.
We can’t wait to share this production on the big stage at the end of the month. The dedication and hours of planning behind the scenes make this one of the most valuable learning experiences across our College, linking classroom lessons to the vibrant world of real-life theatre.
